Compare chilli exporters in Kenya with seven practical questions about product type, packing, lot evidence and the buyer approval process.
About this educational guide: Afrisun Orchards exports avocado and coffee only. The other crops discussed here are for general learning; Afrisun does not offer them for sale or export.
1. Which chilli product is being quoted?
Fresh chillies, dried whole chillies and powdered chilli require different specifications. Name the form and intended use before discussing a price. If variety, colour or a particular heat profile matters, state how it will be evaluated. A photograph alone cannot confirm the characteristics required for your product.
2. What does the buyer's specification say?
Define size, appearance, stem requirements, acceptable defects and packing. For a processor, include the production requirements that affect acceptance. Avoid substituting general statements about quality for measurable criteria. Ask the supplier to flag any point it cannot confirm rather than silently assuming an alternative.
3. How are lots identified?
Ask how a packed lot connects to its source and handling records. Keep sample identifiers linked to quotations and later deliveries. If the proposed commercial lot differs from the sample, request a fresh approval decision. Do not assume a good sample establishes the condition of future lots.
4. Which evidence applies to this order?
Request current, relevant documents and review their named products, facilities and validity. Buyer-specific testing or audit requirements should be raised before the order is prepared. The destination importer and its advisers should confirm current market requirements. This guide does not establish that any particular exporter is approved for your destination.
5. How will the chillies be packed?
Confirm net weight, container format, labelling and how the pack will be handled at receiving. Ask for a sample or clear description of unfamiliar packaging. Agree how changes will be authorised. When comparing quotes, make sure each supplier prices the same product and pack assumptions.
6. What is included in the offer?
Identify currency, delivery point, quoted quantity, validity and exclusions. Clarify who arranges transport and who supplies the agreed paperwork. Do not compare a collected-at-origin price with a delivered price as though the services were identical. Obtain a written offer rather than treating an informal chat as a complete contract.
7. How will concerns be reported?
Agree the receiving inspection process and the information needed for a quality enquiry. Record lot codes, packaging condition, photographs and the quantity affected. Keep observations separate from assumptions about cause. Use the record to decide whether further inspection or a change in the next supply plan is appropriate.
Where Afrisun fits
This article is an educational resource for buyers researching the category. Afrisun does not grow, stock or export chillies as part of its stated offering. Its commercial enquiries are limited to avocado and coffee. Contact an independent chilli supplier for an actual chilli quotation.
Further reading: the UC Davis produce fact sheets provide crop-specific postharvest references. Use the sheet for the actual crop and ask a qualified handling specialist to confirm the conditions suitable for your lot and route.
